How to

Install Your WordPress Theme

  1. Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme
  2. Upload the genesis.zip file (do not activate it)
  3. Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme
  4. Upload the zip file of your child theme (then activate it)
  5. (You’ll need to install and activate the following plugins to run with your theme) Go to Plugins > Add New > Search bar to search the names of the plugins mentioned below:
 

Optional Plugins

  1. If you are not going to have a portfolio page on your site, you will not need to install this plugin.

    If you are not going to have a shop on your site, you will not need to install these plugins.

  2. (If your blog is brand new and doesn’t have any images yet, you can skip this step) You’ll need to resize your images using the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin so they can have the same size as the images shown in the demo. Go to Tools > Regenerate Thumbnails and click Regenerate Thumbnails for All Attachments

Plugin Setup

  1. In your WordPress menu, go to Jetpack and click Setup Jetpack
  2. Connect your WordPress.com account (if you don’t have one, create one)
  3. Skip the next steps until it gets to the prices page. Down the bottom click Start with free and close the page
  4. In your WordPress menu go to Jetpack > Settings > Traffic
  5. Turn on the related posts options
  1. Go to Appearance > Widgets and drag the Simple Social Icons into the Nav Social Menu and/or Primary Sidebar section
  2. Add your social accounts urls you have and click save
 
  1. Go to Pages > Add New
  2. Give your new page a name
  3. Go to Contact > Add New
  4. Enter a title for your contact form
  5. Go to the Mail tab and make sure the ‘To:’ email is your email address
  6. Save your contact form
  7. Copy the shortcode of your contact form and paste it into your Contact page
  1. Create a page with the title Portfolio
  2. In your WordPress menu, go to Portfolio > Add New Item and start adding your Portfolio items

Templates

  1. Go to Pages > Add New
  2. Give your new page a name
  3. On the right under the Page Attributes panel, you’ll see the Template drop down
  4. Select Category from the drop down
  5. Publish the page
  6. In your WordPress menu, go to Widgets and drag Genesis – Featured Posts widgets into the Category Page section
  1. Go to Pages > Add New
  2. Give your new page a name
  3. Add text to your page
  4. On the right under the Page Attributes panel, you’ll see the Template drop down
  5. Select Landing from the drop down
  6. Publish the page
(If your website doesn’t have a static front page or if you’re not going to set up your static front page because you want to use your website as a blog – showing your latest posts on homepage, you won’t need to have a Blog page)
  1. Go to Pages > Add New
  2. Give your new page a name
  3. On the right under the Page Attributes panel, you’ll see the Template drop down
  4. Select Blog from the drop down
  5. Publish the page

Extras

  1. Go to Appearance > Header and click Add New Image > Upload. Your header image will need to be 1105x350px. (If you already have a logo which is not 1105px by 350px, you can use Photoshop to create a new design 1105×350px. Add your logo image onto the background and save to upload)
  1. Go to Appearance > Menus
  2. Give your menu a name (eg. “Menu 1”) and click Create Menu
  3. Add the pages/categories you want to have in your menu
  4. Under Menu Settings (at the bottom of the page), select “Primary or Secondary Navigation Menu”
  5. Click Save Menu

You can change the layout of a page/post using the Layout Settings on all edit post/page screens. To change the layout site wide, go to Genesis > Theme Settings > Site Layout, select the layout you want your website to have and re-publish your website.

  1. Go to Soliloquy > Add New
  2. Enter a title for your slider
  3. Go to the Config tab and make sure your slider is configured as below:
  4. Save your slider
  5. Copy the shortcode of your slider and paste it into your post/page

To change the text in the About box that appears under each post, go to Users > Your Profile, scroll down to About Yourself and add text to the Biographical Info section.

Go to Genesis > Theme Settings, in Content Archive settings, select Numeric or Previous/Next in Entry Pagination Type section and re-publish your website.

In your WordPress menu, go to Settings > Permalink and select the permalink you want. (Post name is the most recommended option)

Genesis’ new update makes the theme add extra text to your footer. To remove it, in your WordPress menu, go to Appearance > Customize > Theme Settings > Footer. Delete all the coding from the box and re-publish your website.
